San Antonio's 100°F+ summers and drought-prone Hill Country soil make natural grass around pools a losing battle. Synthetic turf built for Texas heat gives you a clean, professional backyard that stays green without irrigation, mowing, or reseeding — and holds up to pool splashout, pets, and heavy foot traffic year after year.
Where We Install
From poolside strips to full backyard transformations — we install in any configuration your space requires.
Why Synthetic Turf in SA
San Antonio's climate stacks three problems that break natural grass around pool areas faster than almost any other Texas market:
The result is a backyard that looks sharp on day one and on year ten — without irrigation, without chemical treatment, and without the annual frustration of trying to keep grass alive in conditions that fight it constantly.
Products
Not all synthetic turf handles Texas heat the same way. We install products specifically rated for high UV exposure and pool-adjacent use.
All products are installed with a 4"–6" crushed granite or decomposed granite base, proper compaction, and secured edging to prevent shifting under San Antonio's limestone-influenced soils.
Natural vs. Synthetic
The upfront cost of turf installation looks higher. The 5-year math doesn't:
| Natural Grass (SA) | Synthetic Turf | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual irrigation cost | $400–$1,200/yr | $0 |
| Mowing (monthly Apr–Oct) | $70–$130/mo = $490–$910/yr | $0 |
| Fertilizer, weed control | $200–$600/yr | $0 |
| Annual overseed / repair | $300–$800/yr | $0 |
| 5-year total operating cost | $7,000–$16,000 | $0–$200 (occasional rinse) |
| Appearance in drought / restrictions | Brown, patchy, dead | Identical to day one |
| Poolside edge condition | Chlorine-burned, bare | Clean, consistent |
| Product warranty | N/A | 15 years |
Most San Antonio homeowners recover the cost of turf installation in 3–5 years through eliminated maintenance costs alone.
Our Process
We measure the installation area, assess existing drainage, grade, and soil conditions, and identify any underground irrigation lines or utilities that need to be marked before excavation. You get a written estimate with material specs and square footage — no guessing.
Existing vegetation and soil is removed to a depth of 3–4 inches. For pool surrounds, we excavate to match the finished turf height flush with existing pool coping or decking. A weed barrier membrane is installed before base material goes in.
4–6 inches of decomposed granite or crushed aggregate is installed and compacted in layers. This base is the most important part of a long-lasting turf installation — it provides drainage, prevents shifting, and creates a firm, level surface. San Antonio's caliche and limestone soils require specific base depths that generic national contractors often underestimate.
Turf rolls are cut, fitted, and seamed invisibly. Blade direction is consistent across all sections for a natural, uniform look. Curved edges around pools, planters, and hardscape are cut cleanly with no gaps.
Infill (silica sand, crumb rubber, or cooling infill depending on product and application) is applied and brushed in to support blade upright position and maintain feel. Perimeter edges are secured with bender board or nailed anchors to prevent lifting under SA's temperature swings.
Power brush lifts the blade and removes installation debris. We walk the full area with you, check every seam, confirm drainage flow, and review care instructions. Most residential installations are complete in 1–2 days.
Investment
Turf installation in San Antonio typically runs $12–$22 per square foot installed, including base prep, product, and labor. Here's how typical projects break down:
Estimates are free and based on exact measured square footage — not guesses. If you're combining turf with a pool build or renovation, we bundle the scopes and you save on mobilization and base work that's shared between trades.
Complete the Backyard
The most common scenario we see: a homeowner builds a new pool or renovates an existing one, the concrete decking looks great — but the surrounding grass areas are a problem from day one. Chlorine splash-out, concentrated foot traffic, and irrigation restrictions make the grass look worse every season.
When turf is installed as part of the same project — during the pool build or renovation — you get one crew, one mobilization, base work that's shared between the deck and turf installation, and a backyard that's finished completely. No second round of excavation, no re-leveling disturbed soil months later.
Design the turf areas alongside the pool plan so the layout is intentional. Pool shape, deck, and turf zones are coordinated from the start — not patched in after the fact.
New pool construction →If you're renovating the pool surface, tile, or decking, this is the ideal window to address the surrounding turf areas before the backyard gets put back together.
Pool renovation →Common Questions
Standard synthetic turf surface temperatures can reach 150–180°F in direct summer sun — too hot for bare feet. This is why product selection matters. We install cooling infill products specifically formulated for high-heat markets that reduce surface temps by 30–50°F compared to standard installations. Shaded areas (under a pergola, near the pool house) are not an issue. Full-sun areas near pools should use our cooling-rated products.
Properly installed pool-side turf is designed for repeated chlorine and salt exposure. We specify products with UV-stable, non-absorbent face fibers that won't fade or degrade from splash-out. The key is product selection (not all turf is rated for poolside use) and drainage — water should never pool against the turf backing.
Periodic rinse with a garden hose (monthly or after heavy use) removes debris and cools the surface. For pet areas, enzymatic cleaners applied quarterly keep odor controlled. Leaf blowers or a stiff brush remove organic debris. Pressure washing is not recommended — it dislodges infill. Annual professional maintenance (infill top-up, power brush) is available.
Yes. Slopes under 30 degrees are standard. Steeper slopes require additional base anchoring and potentially a step or retaining element. We assess grade during the site visit. Many Hill Country backyards with natural slope change are excellent candidates for turf — it holds on grade better than natural grass, which erodes on slopes during SA's heavy rain events.
Most residential installations (under 1,500 sq ft) are complete in 1–2 days. Larger projects or complex shapes with multiple seams take 2–3 days. We can coordinate turf installation to follow pool decking work during a combined renovation project, minimizing total backyard downtime.
